Graves and farm environments

Report 2022: 3
Archaeological Survey

“The grave field is regarded as one of the most magnificent in the Norrkoping area. To be forced to remove this beautiful memorial is a very painful loss for archaeology” (Cnattingius 1958).

Bothstorpsgravfield with its 118 fire Graves was used continuously during the 700-900 centuries. Through the archaeological surveys of 1959 and 2019, it is the largest burial ground from the period that has been explored in its entirety in Ostergotland. The grave field with some 30 mounds, some 80 stone circles and some graves around stone blocks had been erected on the west side of Krusenhofsassen, north of Norrkoping and Bruviken. The quote above, before the field efforts in the 1950s, illustrates the importance of the grave field in the area. In connection with the 2019 survey, farm remains from the younger Bronze Age, early Vendel time and the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times also emerged and were examined.
